People resist making decisions for a variety of reasons. Everything from:
- Lack of confidence
- Resistance to change
- Being passive
- Confusion
- And more
One of the biggest reasons people don’t make a decision is there’s not a good decision available to make. Sometimes there simply isn’t a good decision to be had. There’s no win-win or decision that feels right in the gut.
What do you do when there’s no good decision available?
Before you stick your head in the sand, here are some things to consider when there’s no good decision to be made.
There’s always a choice: It might feel like there’s nothing that can be done in a particular situation or that there are no good choices. There is always a choice. Even if the choice is to decide not to let the decision you’re making against your better judgement destroy you.
Life’s not always fair: Sometimes life throws curve balls at 100 MPH. Bad things happen to good people at the same rate that good things happen to bad people. Feeling attacked by life won’t help make difficult decisions any easier. All you can do is make the best decision possible under the circumstances.
It’s okay to be mad: Some decisions have nothing positive attached to them. It’s okay to be mad, sad, and feel any other emotion that bubbles up. Doing life is hard sometimes and making tough decisions is part of adulting.
Everything changes: This is a moment in time. If you’ve thought things through and have made the best decision for this moment in time, then take heart because time is moving on. It won’t be long until things change and morph into something new. What feels really painful now might feel a smidge easier in just a little while.
You’re building strength: Tough times create tough people. Each tough decision has the opportunity to be a teacher and help you become stronger and more mature.
Sometimes there’s simply not a great decision to be made. That’s alright. You’ve got this! There is still hope and unexpected benefits despite feeling like there are no good choices available.
