Non-verbal communication makes up the majority of what is being shared between two people. Great communication includes speaking and listening, but it is emphasized by non-verbal gestures. As we communicate, our senses take in much more than what is being said audibly. We are paying close attention to other things too. Things like-
- Facial expressions
- Proximity
- Gestures
- Tone of voice
Facial expressions convey interest- When communication is going well, it shows in the face. Our faces tend to express interest, or disinterest, in what is being said. That means it’s important to keep your facial expressions positive and encouraging. The eyes are especially important in great communication. Looking someone in the eye is a sign of interest (although can be a sign of disrespect in other countries). Use your facial expressions to enhance what is being said in a positive way.
Distance indicates interest and comfort- Where we stand during communication speaks volumes about our comfort and interest. People who feel safe and engaged in conversation tend to stand closer together or lean in to show interest. People who are having positive communication also have smaller personal space bubbles. You can use proximity to show someone that you trust them and are enjoying what they have to say.
Gestures emphasize great communication- We live in a society where physical touch can be tricky. Under many circumstances, a light touch on the arm can emphasize care, concern, or interest during communication. Additionally, gesturing to emphasize a point is also a cue for great communication. If you find that you elaborate on what you say by using your hands or arms naturally, you may be increasing the quality of your communication.
Tone of voice relays important information- What you say isn’t as important as how you say it. Congruent words and tone of voice encourage great communication. People make assumptions about what you say based on the tone you deliver it. Keep your tone of voice upbeat and pleasant to ensure they send a positive non-verbal message.
There’s a lot to consider when it comes to great communication. Being articulate is a big part, but there’s a lot of non-verbal communication to consider. Do your best to keep consistency between what you say and how you say it. This will help people feel safer and more interested in what you have to say and get you the title of a great communicator.
