Designing Peaceful Spaces on a Dime

Creating a peaceful home includes adding personality to your space and making your home a reflection of you and your style. It’s easy to be inspired by glossy magazines or websites that showcase amazing looking rooms. You can even get inspiration shopping at stores like Ikea, local furniture stores, or other box stores, but some of the décor can be very expensive and out of the average budget. Thankfully, you can design peaceful spaces for your home on a dime if you know some cool tricks.

Any look can be created on a dime

Most any home décor style can be created on a budget. All you need is some knowhow and ingenuity. It’s fine to get inspiration from expensive stores or websites, but it’s easy to find dupes, sales, or create many of the same looks for less. You just need to know how to cut costs and get creative. Here’s how-

Create a mood board- Start with defining the look you want. You can do this by creating a mood board. This can be done virtually, in real time, or a combination of both. Use tools like Pinterest to “pin” pics of items you want to have in your home. You can create looks for an entire room or simply find pieces of décor or furniture you like.

Measure and photograph your space- Once you have a clear idea of what you want your room to look like, measure the space and take pictures from every angle. Keep these handy on your smartphone for easy access. If you are going to paint your space, be sure to do that before you take pictures. Also, place any existing furniture you know you want to keep prior to taking pictures too. This will give you a visual to go off of when you are shopping for décor.

Go on the hunt- There are many ways to decorate on a dime. Using coupons, discount stores, or shopping online helps. Use your virtual mood board to help you narrow down what items you want to purchase and review your pictures of the room to visualize the placement and scope of the pieces. Here are some useful tips for getting great deals on décor-

  • Tip-Many big box stores have discounted décor available. Start in the discount isle and see if anything works for your look.
  • Tip- Use stores like Home Goods, Marshalls, TJ Maxx or regional favorites to find discounted décor including bedding, curtains, rugs, and some furnishings.
  • Tip- Don’t forget to check out the thrift shops. Many have name brand items and it’s easy to paint, modify, or upcycle items to fit your vibe.
  • Tip- Many seamstresses sew home décor. If you need a custom slipcover or curtains, it can save you money to have a local seamstress do the sewing.
  • Tip- Follow discount and DIY accounts on social media to learn new tips, tricks, and resources that you can use for your décor.

Enjoy the treasure hunt- Don’t get in a rush to find everything right away. Part of the joy of designing on a dime is being patient for the right sale, the right store, or the right opportunity to find the perfect items at a discount. Get excited about the treasure hunt and you’ll enjoy the process even more.

Don’t worry that remodeling or redesigning your home will be too expensive. Any look can be created on a dime. With the right attitude and some fun tips, you can achieve any look you want much cheaper than you thought.
