Brave Actions – Taking Action Every Day Builds Bravery

Bravery is built on tiny steps taken over time. Taking risks and managing the consequences helps dilute the intensity and makes difficult things just a bit easier. Building an intentionally brave mindset doesn’t happen passively. It’s built intentionally by taking strategic action. From overcoming a phobia to building the courage to try a new adventure, there are things you can do to proactively get there.

Taking one action every day towards your brave goal can ease you out of fear and into confidence. Here are some examples:

Public Speaking – If public speaking is a goal but the thought of speaking before a large crowd is petrifying, taking things one day at a time can ease your fear. You may want to start practicing speaking with someone you know well and have a great deal of comfort with. Next, you may want to join a speaking group like Toastmasters and practice speaking in small settings. Next, book a larger speaking opportunity and gear up for a bigger group. Each day do one thing that stretches you and pushes you to get out of your comfort zone.

Flying – Flying causes a lot of problems for people. The fear can limit opportunities and make it difficult to travel when taking a car isn’t feasible. Committing to taking a flight can be an opportunity to overcome the phobia. Begin by getting education about flying. The more questions you ask ahead of time, the calmer you can be on the big day. Ask for pre-boarding privileges if it is your first time. Most airlines can accommodate your need if you are honest about your fear. Travel with someone who is confident and can assist you with distractions or a calm presence. Do something each day leading up to the flight to help you prepare and overcome your fear and you’ll be less likely to lose control when you fly.

The key to your success is to take an action each day so it becomes a habit. Over time the newness will wear off and your mind and your body will become accustomed to behaving or operating in a new manner. The more you do the activity or engage in the fear-inducing situation, the less intense the fear will be and it will be replaced with courage. In time you may experience zero distress or develop the bravery to overcome your natural tendency and override your fears.
