Perfectionism seems like a good thing, doesn’t it? Taking pride in your work and wanting to do a good job seems like something to strive for. However, perfectionism goes beyond simply a desire to do your best. It puts pressure on you to achieve a standard that is not attainable, and this can be quite damaging.
One of the ways in which the need to be perfect plays out badly for many of us is through procrastination. Trying to make sure everything is perfect is just exhausting. Instead of pushing you to do great things, it can actually have the opposite effect. It can stop you in your tracks and keep you from making any progress at all.
There are many reasons why perfectionism leads to procrastination. Fear that you won’t be good enough is one of the most often-cited. Setting unrealistic standards for yourself and low confidence in yourself can also lead you to put important things off. Comparing yourself to others might also be cause for delay.
Regardless of the reasons, the perfectionism-procrastination cycle steals your happiness and holds you back from living your true potential. Knowing this can cause all kinds of negative emotions that just add to the problem.
